The Power of Garlic Powder

My project is going to be a comparison on whether birds prefer garlic
powder in their food or not.

Hypothesis

I think the birds will prefer the garlic powder over the regular bird food because it has more smell. I think the birds will pick up the scent faster than the regular birdseed. My alternate hypothesis is that the birds are extremely lazy, and they will eat the food most convenient to the birdbath.

Materials

Two bird feeders
A weight scale
A measuring cup
Garlic Powder
Bird seed

Procedure

I will set up two bird feeders, one with garlic powder, one without, six cups in each. At the end of each day, I will measure how much bird feed has been eaten by measuring both feeders by weight at night for a week. Because there is a birdbath near one of the feeders, I will swap the feeders every day.

Variables

Independent Variable: Whether the garlic powder is in the feeder.
Dependent Variable: The amount of food eaten from each feeder.
Controlled Variables: How much is in the feeders, whether there is garlic powder or not, and the time I weigh the feeders.

Updated Hypothesis

After putting the surroundings of my house into account, I believe not many birds will eat anything at all. My house is circled by lots and lots of other houses, and many of these houses probably have bird feeders of their own. Also, the birds might be frightened by all of the cars and houses in the neighborhood.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe that so little was eaten that there was no real result. With so many houses around, I think there couldn't have been a large difference. If the project had been done in a more rural area, I believe the results would have varied much more. It's also possible I didn't put enough garlic powder in to make a difference.
